Tequila has become one of the most popular drinks in the country recently. Every year, new brands enter the market of Mexican spirits, offering a wide variety of options and alternatives. As a result, drinking tequila along with different dishes is becoming quite common. However, there are several food pairings for tequila that will take our meals to a whole different level, enrichening the taste of our favorite spirits, too.
If we want to find the perfect food pairings for tequila on a given occasion, we should think of the type of tequila we are drinking, first. Thus, we will be looking at three different types of tequila. These three include Blanco, Reposado, and Anejo. Here are our favorite dishes to enjoy with this delicious Mexican spirit.
Food Pairings for Tequila Blanco
Let’s begin with some of the best pairings for tequila Blanco. We should remember that Blanco is the purest form of tequila as producers do not age this. As a result, we are able to taste the true flavor of the agave and its natural sweetness. Silver or Blanco tequila works better when we pair it with appetizers. Think of salads and soups, or anything with more of a citrusy flavor, too. Ceviche can be a great pairing for tequila Blanco, along with vegetables or even fish.
Food Pairings for Tequila Reposado
Just as Blanco works great for appetizers, tequila Reposado can be a great pairing for the main course of a three-meal course. Generally, a Reposado ages in wood barrels for periods between two and eleven months. This is how distillers manage to balance the natural flavor of blue agave and the wood of the barrels they use. Because of its oaky flavor, tequila reposado works great to accompany spicy foods, or grilled meats like pork or steaks. Foods that consist of cinnamon, orange, or even honey, will be great pairings for Reposado, too.
Food Pairings for Tequila Añejo
Tequila Añejo is aged for a period of at least 12 months. This way it achieves its dark, amber-like color, along with its burnt, sugary flavor, too. Because of its unique taste, tequila Añejo is best enjoyed when we pair it with red meats. Also, flavors like coffee or chocolate help balance its full flavor while still allowing us to enjoy its natural taste. Dishes that come with a strong flavor are better enjoyed when we pair them with our favorite Tequila Añejo.
