As you might have guessed, paloma is the Spanish word for dove, and the name of the drink takes inspiration from this popular bird. There are other theories around the name of this popular cocktail, although no one is absolutely sure where the name come from. Some say that the drink was inspired by a very famous song from the early 1860s titled “La Paloma”. However, others say that the famous cocktail was created by Don Javier Delgado Corona, a legendary bartender, and owner of La Capilla de Don Javier, one of the most popular and traditional taverns in the world, located in the town of Tequila, Jalisco, México.
The recipe of a Paloma is quite simple and easy, which has contributed to the popularity of the drink, as pretty much anybody can prepare a delicious one without much effort. There are many recipes out there, but the main ingredients needed to make a Paloma include grapefruit juice or soda, lime juice, agave nectar, and your favorite tequila. We recommend using blanco or silver tequila instead of reposado or añejo to get the best results.
Once we have mixed all the ingredients together, we should serve this cocktail in a glass full of ice. Even when we might come across different types of glassware to serve cocktails, we should try to use a highball glass. In order to make the cocktail even better, we also suggest salting the rim of the glass before serving the drink. This way, we will have a summer-looking and refreshing drink like no other. Don’t be afraid to experiment, though, and if you are not serving the Paloma on the rocks, you can use a smaller glass, too. Just make sure you can add a slice of grapefruit or lime to garnish the drink.
